IDEAL Artspace
Temporary curatorial project
Co-curated with Erik Olson
Calgary, Alberta, Canada
2008

Located in a former auto-shop in the city of Calgary’s entertainment district, IDEAL provided a platform for emerging artists through informal event-based exhibitions. In September 2007, Erik Olson began renovations on an abandoned gas station (formerly Ideal Rentals) at the corner of 17th Ave and 1st Street SW. Following a self-curated painting show in the building, Olson, in collaboration with Erica Brisson, began programming a series of contemporary exhibitions in the space. From December 2007 to September 2008, IDEAL hosted twelve events, featuring experimental art by emerging artists, ranging from wild event-based shows, to quiet, conceptual exhibitions. IDEAL’s diverse output was unified by the strong character of the space it inhabited as well as a dedication to creating critical yet accessible exhibitions. In October 2008 IDEAL was closed due to the building’s scheduled demolition.
