Rainy streets. Doors. Windows. Bright facades. Long shadows. Hard edges and soft colours. This new drawing series explores my experience of buildings that I encountered during daily walks in the Friedrichshain neighborhood of Berlin.
Portraiture plays a large role in most of my projects. For me, it is important to capture a keen physical likeness as well as a sense of mood and character. I have been creating commissioned portraits for over 20 years.
Candy labels. Endless lists of ingredient lists full of indecipherable chemical names. A classic pen brand. An awkwardly bilingual takeout vinegar package. For me, everyday objects are full of character. They tell stories about their makers and the people who consume them.
Which places in the city stick with you? Which would you want to hold in your memory if you left? Inspired by these questions, this series of drawings reproduced as postcards explored the idea of personal landmarks and my relationship to public spaces in Toronto, Canada. The drawings later became part of a larger participatory project for Koffler Arts called Local Colour Info Centre.
Consulting at the Intersection of Coaching + Organizational Development
Deutsche Gesellschaft für Coaching (German Association of Coaches)
What happens when organizational coaches from all over Germany get together for a day of workshops and skill-building? The DGfC invited me to attend their annual meeting in 2015 and reflect on the experience through a series of illustrations. The illustrations give a feeling for atmosphere of the conference, from an opening stretching exercise to discussions around stress in the workplace. The illustrations became part of DGfC's annual publication for which Tanja Knaus and I also created a new design concept.
To support the open call for the 2015 edition of Tandem Turkey, a cultural exchange program between Turkey and the European Union, I created a series of word clouds in English and Turkish encouraging potential participants to apply to the program. The word clouds were used on the Tandem website and as part of social media and print publications.
A series of five postcard pairs promoting Tandem Europe, a new exchange programme supporting culture and social innovation in the European Union. The postcards are meant for keeping one and sharing with a friend, in keeping with Tandem Europe's spirit of partnership and collaboration. Illustrated and designed in collaboration with Tanja Knaus.
Citytoolbox is a new online platform that shares tools and strategies for producing community-based initiatives, from neighbourhood walks to printmaking workshops to community festivals. I created a visual language of hand-drawn illustrations to reflect Citytoolbox's grassroots, DIY spirit. As part of the development process, I also worked together with the CityToolbox team to develop a story-collecting survey for community initiatives.
